Akai Hane Post-Corona (New Infectious Disease) Social Welfare Activity Support Campaign - Support Activities for People with Foreign Roots Grant (3rd Round) Activity Report

From April 1, 2023, to August 31, 2023, we received support for our activities aimed at assisting people with foreign roots through the Central Community Chest of Japan (CCCJ) grant (the third round). We are pleased to present our activity report here.

OFP is a communication support initiative that helps foreign residents adapt to Japanese society, deepens mutual understanding between cultures, and promotes cultural synergy.

In the 2022 fiscal year, the number of participants more than doubled from the previous year, reaching a total of 595. During the grant period, we welcomed 91 new Otonari-san volunteers and 59 foreign participants. Additionally, 66 new pairs began activities, and 92 individuals completed six months of engagement. Regarding the reasons for participation, in addition to traditional internet searches, many cited "referrals from acquaintances," which have spread through word of mouth, leading to a continued increase in participants who joined through these referrals. We held 18 informational sessions for participants.

Currently, foreign residents participating in the OFP come from over 40 countries and regions. This is generally proportional to the ratio of foreign residents living in Tokyo, and it is expanding as an initiative aimed at foreign residents.

Here are some testimonials from participants.

◆Foreign Participants (Japanese Translation)

Thanks to Otonari-san, I found the courage to talk to Japanese people.

I found the perfect pairing-up, and we became wonderful friends who keep in touch even after the program ended.

"The coordinator was very kind and selected a great Otonari-san that matched my needs."

Not only did my Japanese improve, but I also enjoyed cultural exchange by going out to eat together.

"Otonari-san is passionate about his work, and as a job seeker, I have come to want to find a job I love and become an expert like him."

Otonari-san Volunteer (Japanese Participants)

"I used to think that volunteering required a lot of effort from the helpers, but after participating, I realized that it wasn't about doing everything for others; it felt more like I gained a good friend to talk to every now and then."

We were able to learn about each other's culture while in Japan by inviting each other to our homes and sharing home-cooked meals.

I have come to realize that the elementary school communication notebooks, homework, and meetings with teachers that I have passed by without any questions are significant hurdles for foreigners who do not understand the language.

"Although my partner and I are close in age, we grew up in completely different circumstances, so our interactions were very refreshing."

We sincerely appreciate your understanding and cooperation in our efforts to realize a society of cultural synergy that includes foreigners. We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to those who have donated to the Central Community Chest of Japan. We kindly ask for your continued support and cooperation for JII's activities in the future.
