We became wonderful friends who keep in touch even after the JII/OFP program ended! Perfect pairing-up! (Testimonial from a foreign participant)

How did you first learn about the Otonari-san program?

Two years ago, a friend of mine participated in this program. When I mentioned that I was struggling to understand various things in Japan, she told me about this program. From what I heard, I thought it would be very helpful even for foreigners who have lived in Japan for a long time. So, I looked up the JII website and decided to join the program.

What motivated you to participate?

One reason is that I have the opportunity to ask any questions about daily life in Japan. The systems in Japan, such as banks and post offices, are particularly complex for me. Even if I consult my friends, they may not be knowledgeable about these matters. Additionally, there are systems designed for foreigners, so it would be helpful to have someone with experience who knows how to handle such issues. Having someone who can speak Japanese or provide interpretation was also very important to me.

How did you interact with Otonari-san over the past six months?

We interacted online, went to cafes, and had lunch together. Our interactions were about half online and half in person. We met once a week, spending about an hour online and around two hours when we met for breakfast or lunch.

At that time, due to the COVID situation, we decided to meet half online and half in person. However, now that things have settled down, I believe we can build better relationships by meeting face-to-face, so I would like to meet in person more often from now on.

We talked about various topics, including daily life, my experiences living in Japan, and my life in Italy before coming here. Since she has an international background, she shared many stories about her experiences living abroad and her life after returning to Japan. Her parents also live overseas, so she understands the challenges of living in a foreign country. Therefore, discussions about life abroad became a common topic for us.

In addition to meeting regularly to talk, there were times when I would call for help if I encountered any difficulties.

Have you had any memorable experiences or moments of joy while interacting with Otonari-san?

The happiest moment was when we went to a café together. The café was filled with blooming flowers and was a very beautiful place. We enjoyed afternoon tea together, and it was truly lovely with a great atmosphere, making it a very enjoyable day.

Another memorable experience was when we went to a Mexican restaurant together. We both love Mexican food, but it had been a long time since we last had it, so I was really happy to go together. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was very much like Mexico, so we had a great time. These two moments are what stand out the most to me.

How did Otonari-san support you?

When I was trying to open a bank account, it took a long time and didn't go smoothly. I don't think I could have done it without Otonari-san.

I hadn't received my card from the bank, but when I consulted Otonari-san, they helped me express my concerns in Japanese so I could communicate effectively with the bank. When I used the phrases Otonari-san taught me while contacting the bank, they understood me, and I was able to receive my card. It had taken a long time up to that point, so I was very grateful.

How has your relationship with Otonari-san changed and developed?

I believe that my relationship with Otonari-san developed in a very natural way. At first, of course, there was some distance since we didn't know each other, but she was very friendly, and I tend to be friendly as well, so it was easy to warm up to each other. Her personality is so great that it might actually be difficult not to get along. From the first time we spoke during the pairing-up interview, I immediately felt a positive impression of her, so I think we were compatible from the start. It was a very good pairing-up.

She was truly kind, and I never felt any issues or disagreements from start to finish. She always supported me, and being with her brings a sense of security and comfort.

We decided to become friends and keep in touch even after the program ended. Even now, we go to cafes together and have lunch, developing a relationship that feels more like friends than just "Otonari-san." I think this program is great because it allows us to meet friends and deepen our relationships.

Have you experienced any changes in your daily life or within yourself since participating in the Otonari-san program?

Participating in the OFP has given me the confidence that I can always ask for help if I encounter any difficulties. I have gained a sense of security and confidence while living in Japan.

I have a Japanese husband, but I often hesitate to consult him when I have problems. If I always talk to him about my daily struggles, it turns into a conversation filled with worries. I want to enjoy our time together and discuss other topics, so having someone else to help is truly appreciated. My Otonari-san is a great source of support for me.

Do you have any advice for foreigners who are thinking about participating in the Otonari-san program in the future?

Otonari-san will make an effort to support you, so I believe you should always keep your promised time. If, for any reason, you cannot meet, please let them know in advance with a message. It is rude to keep someone waiting and waste their time without informing them.

I hope that other foreigners can enjoy this program just like I do, and I want them to learn about Japanese culture and daily life while finding companions to connect with.

Please leave a message for Otonari-san

I really enjoy interacting with Otonari-san. Thank you so much for always supporting me!
